Johnstown, Pennsylvania to Austin, Texas

It's been over a week since we've had a road trip to forecast, but today we'll be headed from Johnstown to Austin on a three day voyage. It's a 1510 mile trip which we'll cover at about 65.4 miles per hour, meaning we'll get about 523 miles a day. The forecasts say temperatures in the north are going to be cooling off again, so let's hurry and start heading south.

DAY ONE

The first half of our day will be spent in the hills of western Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and the second half will be almost exclusively spent in Kentucky. A departing system and a developing system will be running along the same sort of Dallas to Detroit path, and between the two, they will be kicking up some moisture that could generate a stray batch of dense clouds, particularly in the Huntington, West Virginia area. It should be dry as we arrive in Glendale, Kentucky, our destination for the night. If you're up for sightseeing, Glendale isn't too far away from Lincoln's birthplace. I have no idea why I-65 is so rife with tourist destinations. I digress.

DAY TWO
The mileage will work out just so that we will be equidistant from "Social Hill" and "Friendship" Arkansas, both of which are between Hot Springs and Arkadelphia. Hot Springs being the bigger city, I think Social Hill is a better bet, but don't they both sound hospitable? The weather won't be terribly hospitable as that developing system from Tuesday will become stationary pretty much entirely along our route. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will pop up after we make a southwest turn at Nashville and will linger with us all the way to Social Hill. The heaviest storms will be as we approach the Greater Hot Springs area, but an isolated thunderstorm is possible anywhere in Arkansas.

DAY THREE
Yet another low developing in the Red River will bring introduce a strong line of thunderstorms that will certainly intersect our route. We'll likely run into a line of strong thunderstorms with gusty winds around the Mt. Pleasant, Texas area, although timing this far into the future is sketchy. If things remain as they are now, we'll be through that leading, severe edge and into some general rain showers by the time we reach Sulphur Springs, but Austin should be a beautiful, if muggy, by the time we arrive.
